Doing to Data what Bitcoin did to Money - The Cere Mission

February 13, 2025

We're at the dawn of a future where AI is your constant companion, enriching your daily life in real-time.

This is the promise of ambient AI – intelligent agents (or assistants, if you will) that operate seamlessly in the background, capturing every data related to your life, and proactively anticipating your needs.

These ambient agents will whisper clever insights into your ears during conversations, summarize relevant meeting information; or provide real-time travel updates with accurate arrival times while buying tickets seamlessly behind the scenes. Many others are innovating towards this vision as we speak.

This fundamental need for data sovereignty translates to the ability to own and control all of your personal information while permitting trusted and audited AI agents to securely compute on your data, allowing personalized ambient AI that works for you.

However, two critical challenges must be solved before this can become a reality.

Firstly, persistent, autonomous agents must constantly analyze every piece of data you produce, which demands a radical shift in how we manage data. Beyond the constant data breaches and walled data gardens such as Google, Apple, and Meta, the current centralized cloud infrastructure (i.e. AWS, Oracle, Azure) is simply not equipped to power this privacy-first, hyper-personalized AI era, as we’ve previously explored in Data Management Evolution: From Relational to Decentralized Systems.

Secondly, a new class of edge clusters is directly needed to handle today’s data tsunami to be able to automatically process data for nearby users to extract the small % of these constant large data streams that are critical insights in near real-time, while coupling these agile datasets with specific AI agents, effectively bringing intelligence to these data.

We have been tirelessly working on these two issues since 2019, building the Cere Protocol and its decentralized Layer1 blockchain, together powering and securing Decentralized Data Clusters, with the first such cluster already in production, serving real users and developers while processing billions of transactions.

The Vision

Our vision is to enable thousands, and eventually millions, of autonomous decentralized data clusters worldwide—each serving distinct communities and/or vertical use cases, all secured and powered by Cere Protocol and the $CERE token, forming the backbone of a truly autonomous and privacy-first ambient AI future.

These Cere-powered data clusters feature technology that can turn any bare metal server into a node that can participate in autonomous, decentralized data clusters powered by the Cere Protocol (and its L1 blockchain). Cere data clusters can also be run in private/federated mode, to serve enterprise use cases where autonomous data infrastructures are needed for full, sovereign AI agent automation.

You can acquire $CERE tokens and use one of the existing community clusters, you can leverage your idle computing device(s) as a part of one of the clusters to earn proceeds in $CERE tokens for powering other users’ data compute, or you can submit a request to create your own Cere powered data cluster. This addresses the second challenge previously stated, by providing the incentivization framework for idle computing resources to self-organize together as autonomous data clusters  to address the data cloud needs of many communities and industries going forward.

Cere data clusters can store and serve data, in both structured and unstructured formats. The Cere cluster makes its data available for pub/sub interfaces, both for incremental data processing and to power use cases such as video streaming and data encryption/decryption. Not only Cere data clusters use erasure coding to ensure secure sharding and preservation of data while maintaining data privacy, all data operations are audited and accounted for, with dynamic inspections performed by CERE blockchain validators, which also automates payments and penalizes bad actors leveraging the full power of the $CERE blockchain.

One of the key differences with traditional data infrastructure is that data sovereignty and data integrity can be enforced at the data cluster level (hint: encrypting everyone’s data like Bitcoin). This, along with fully autonomous operations provides the necessary foundation to power the secure data automation needed by AI agents.  Cere data clusters also support fine-grained access control, up to and including NFT-based access tokens that are journaled on the blockchain, and are cryptographically secured so that only their current owner can have such a token change hands.

The Mission

Most importantly, Cere data clusters are designed for extensibility. We are expecting many consumer and enterprise-focused AI projects to leverage its data automation with AI Agents to build use cases not easily feasible on today's data clouds, extending the Data Sovereignty revolution further, to include AI Compute Sovereignty in it.

On the heel of having launched and operated Dragon 1, the first data cluster that has performed billions of operations with real-world applications and users, along with many tools and utilities to support developers, we are excited to announce that we are launching the second data cluster with an enterprise AI partner. We will soon announce the availability slots for fully decentralized 3rd party data clusters that any CERE token holder can potentially sign up to join.

The future of data is here in 2025, our goal was always to do to data what Bitcoin did to money: creating a system where both data sovereignty and secure AI orchestration are foundational in the convergence of both AI and web3 innovations, to unlock the true potential of ambient AI — a future where AI truly empowers us, and not the other way around."
